Bold take: Toys “R” Us Canada is shutting the door on gift cards as of today. If you still have one, this is your final chance to spend it.
The retailer announced that it will stop accepting gift cards after Monday, a move tied to creditor protection proceedings the company initiated earlier this month as it tussles with mounting bills.
When the filing was made, court documents indicated the business carried more than $36 million in outstanding gift card liabilities.
A judge subsequently permitted the retailer to halt card redemptions after a 14-day window, which ends on Monday.
The judge also granted permission to liquidate additional portions of the remaining 22 stores if lease negotiations with landlords break down.
