A clinical Sri Lanka dominated their Group B rivals, Oman, with a commanding 105-run victory in Pallekele on Thursday, February 12. This win, their second consecutive triumph in the tournament, propelled them to the top of the group's points table.
While the result was largely anticipated, Oman did manage to keep the hosts on their toes at various stages of the game. A notable moment came early on when Sufyan Mehmood trapped Pathum Nissanka leg before wicket on 13, leaving Sri Lanka reeling at 42 for 2 after the openers' early departure.
However, Pavan Rathnayake, with a blazing knock, ensured Sri Lanka regained control. He struck three boundaries in quick succession, shifting the momentum in their favor. Sri Lanka's batters then displayed a calculated aggression, with the exception of the 10th over where Wasim Ali's no-balls and wayward line allowed Sri Lanka to score freely.
Kusal Mendis and Rathnayake's partnership of 72 set the platform for a late onslaught. Mendis began the 13th over with a boundary, and Rathnayake followed suit with three consecutive boundaries, bringing up his half-century in the process. Dasun Shanaka, who joined the party, smoked five massive sixes and two boundaries in the next couple of overs, reaching a 19-ball half-century, the fastest by a Sri Lankan in T20Is.
Oman fought back briefly, picking up two wickets in the penultimate over, but Kamindu Mendis's late fireworks ensured Sri Lanka posted a mammoth total.
Chasing 226, Oman never looked like threatening the target. Dushmantha Chameera and Maheesh Theekshana struck early, reducing Oman to 36 for 3 in the PowerPlay. Mohammad Nadeem and Wasim Ali offered some resistance, but they were always behind the required rate.
A bizarre umpiring decision saw Wasim Ali given out caught behind in the 12th over, a call that sparked controversy. This dismissal triggered a collapse, with Oman losing four wickets in quick succession, including a couple of run-outs.
Mohammad Nadeem fought valiantly, but Oman's tailenders failed to provide any support, with only Jay Odedra and Shah Faisal managing to stick around.
Sri Lanka's comprehensive victory sets them up nicely for the remainder of the tournament, while Oman will need to regroup and find ways to compete against stronger opponents.
