A former pro sports insider shares his unexpected journey from NHL locker rooms to high school classrooms.
Living the Dream, But...
Matt Charbonneau's career took him from the bright lights of professional sports to the halls of education, and his story is an inspiring one. While he cherished the moments of calling games and being part of major leagues, there was a catch - the long hours and relentless pressure left little room for a personal life.
The PF Connection
It all started at Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School, where Matt spent his formative years. PF, as he calls it, not only gave him a community but also set him on a path that would shape his future. He fondly remembers the bus rides, lifelong friendships, and influential teachers like Greg and Mary-Frances Goodwin, whose impact is still felt today.
A Shift in Focus
Matt's interest in sports took an unexpected turn. Instead of pursuing a sports career, he became fascinated with the people covering the games. This led him to journalism, where he immersed himself in the world of sports reporting. With the support of PF's guidance counselors, he entered Carleton University's journalism program and quickly gained practical experience.
From Media Relations to Teaching
His journey took him through the world of media relations, working with teams like the Montreal Expos and the Washington Capitals. However, the glamour of professional sports couldn't outweigh the desire for a more fulfilling personal life. Matt's faith, strengthened at PF, guided him towards a new calling - teaching.
Teaching as a Calling
Now in his 19th year as a high school religion teacher, Matt brings his journalism experience into the classroom. He teaches students critical thinking skills, helping them navigate the noise and communicate effectively. Despite the contrast between his past and present careers, Matt believes his work as a teacher is just as impactful.
Life's Surprises
Matt's story is a reminder that life often takes unexpected turns. He encourages young dreamers to pursue their passions, even if the path seems uncertain. His own journey, from sports enthusiast to educator, is a testament to the power of following one's heart and staying true to one's values.
And Here's the Twist...
Matt's faith has been a constant thread throughout his journey, guiding his decisions and keeping him grounded. As he reflects on his 49th birthday, he sees the hand of God in his life's work, tying together hard work, persistence, and encouragement.
