The Birth of Death Metal: A Controversial Blueprint?
Death metal legend Kam Lee, former vocalist of MASSACRE and early DEATH, recently dropped a bombshell on his Beyond The Massacre Podcast: the genre's blueprint, he claims, comes from none other than SLAYER. But here's where it gets controversial: Lee insists that denying this influence is simply being "a complete prick."
Lee, who drummed alongside Chuck Schuldiner in the pre-DEATH band MANTAS, traces the evolution of death metal's sound. He acknowledges the raw energy of bands like VENOM and the punk influence of DISCHARGE, but argues SLAYER's "breaks" and "breakdowns" were the missing link. "It's the SLAYER breaks," he explains, "the music flows, then it has this break or breakdown, and then it goes into something else." He believes this structural element, absent in much modern death metal, is what gives the genre its distinctive groove and chug.
And this is the part most people miss: Lee doesn't dismiss the contributions of Scandinavian death metal, but points out its focus on crust punk and D-beat, lacking the "groove" of Florida's scene. He credits bands like POSSESSED, SACRIFICE, and HELLHAMMER for shaping the vocal style, but his own growl, he says, was inspired by the primal sounds of Rottweilers during feeding time.
Lee's upcoming project, Massacre Plays Mantas Death By Metal Demo, promises to resurrect the raw power of MANTAS' early recordings, a "powerful tribute" to a pivotal moment in death metal history. The first performance is slated for Kill-Town Death Fest XI in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2026.
The debate over death metal's origins is far from settled. Lee acknowledges POSSESSED's early influence, even admitting DEATH "took heavy influence" from them. But he staunchly defends SLAYER's role as the genre's architectural blueprint.
