Craig Lowndes makes early start at Team 18
The seven-time Bathurst 1000 winner, Craig Lowndes, has made a bold move by joining Team 18, marking a significant shift from his long-standing association with Triple Eight. This transition comes as a result of Triple Eight's defection from Chevrolet, leading to a series of changes in the racing world. Lowndes, known for his enthusiasm and racing prowess, is now set to embark on a new chapter with Team 18.
During his recent visit to Triple Eight, Lowndes handed over his iconic #888 plate to Will Brown, signaling a passing of the torch. This move has sparked curiosity among fans, as Lowndes prepares to transition to his new team. The 51-year-old is eager to explore his new home, the Melbourne workshop of Team 18, and is optimistic about his upcoming test drives.
In an interview with Speedcafe, Lowndes expressed his excitement, stating, "We're working on seating positions and getting ahead of the game. When we drive the car, it will feel familiar. I'll be part of Team 18, understanding their philosophy and operations, which is crucial for our setup before Bathurst."
Lowndes will continue his partnership with a young co-driver in the Enduro Cup races, with Porsche Carrera Cup star Bayley Hall rumored to be in the running for the coveted seat. This collaboration will provide valuable experience for the 22-year-old, as Lowndes makes his 33rd start in the Great Race.
When asked about his initial impressions of Team 18, Lowndes praised the team's organization and familiarity. He said, "They're carrying over the Camaros from last year, and they're pretty organized. I've known Charlie Schwerkolt for a long time, and he's a skilled operator. ATB (Adrian Burgess) and Richard Hollway are familiar faces, which is great for me."
The question on everyone's mind is whether Team 18, alongside drivers Anton De Pasquale and David Reynolds, can fill the void left by Triple Eight and win races for GM. Lowndes believes it's achievable, but emphasizes the importance of consistency. He stated, "Triple Eight's strength has always been their consistency and ability to bounce back from setbacks. Team 18 needs to find that consistency, especially after strong performances in 2025."
Despite his absence from the Bathurst 12 Hour, a first in a decade, Lowndes remains optimistic about Team 18's potential. He will be revealing his race number on Monday and will be an integral part of the team's season launch on Tuesday.
